Knife Care

Care and Maintenance

Like any quality item, knives from Studio Singh, there will be some maintenance to be done in order to extend the lifespan of the product. With proper care, these knives will last a lifetime and will serve as something to pass from generation to generation

Here are some essential tips to ensure the life of your knife:

  • Hand wash only, using a soft sponge

  • Do NOT put the knife in the dishwasher or you will risk damage and a reduction in lifespan

  • Our knives are thinner than mass produced knives which means the edge and tip are thin. This allows us to have sharper edges and an increase in performance and feel. However, thin tips and edges mean you cannot cut anything frozen or use the knife to open anything due to the risk of broken tips and chipped edges

  • A good rule of thumb is: if you wouldn’t use your teeth to do something, don’t use your knife. If you think something could damage the knife, it will; use another tool instead

  • Wipe the knife completely dry after washing (or between uses) prior to storing on a magnetic bar or knife block (drawers are not recommended)

  • All steel used is non-stainless high carbon, which means it is not stain resistant. Leaving moisture or food particles on the blade for a long period will cause rust

  • With use, some discoloration will develop on your blade. This is a reaction that is caused when the knife interacts with the acids of the food. It causes a thin layer, called a patina, that will protect it from rust and corrosion (pictured above)

  • Natural materials, such as wood, are all stabilized which means it has been infused with epoxy to prevent any expansion and wear due to moisture. It could use a coat of food safe mineral oil, from time to time and will not require serious maintenance

  • Synthetic materials like G-10, micarta or carbon fiber are extremely durable and do not need much maintenance
